Why does it matter?

Well Gartner estimates that two out of five enterprises that experience a disaster will go out of business within five years. Enterprises can improve these odds – but only if they take the necessary measures before and after the disaster.

The self assessment tool has been written by Michael Gallagher and was first published in a recent issue of Accountancy Ireland, the Journal of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.

At this time, Arc Solutions were working at a client’s offices when the local river burst its banks forcing the closure of the office.  The  resulting mayhem while staff were re-assigned to  offices in other parts of the country and inadequate business continuity arrangements were invoked showed that the plans were inadequate.  The firm had to put a brave face on a serious challenge to its business.

This experience reflects the findings of the 2008 BERR report that more than a quarter of UK companies do not have a disaster recovery plan in place and nearly half of those that have plans (48%) had not tested them in the last year.
